O.K., I found it. Now do I want to remove metal around the valve opening UP to the part where the valve and valve seat seal?

Thats what I did. I used a dremmel with a tungsten carbide cutter.

Yep, but be careful not to nick or otherwise damage the valve seat sealing area. I'd stay at least 1/8" away from it.
