I am installing new valve stem seals as a matter of course in my '82 225 /six. But the seals I was sold fit tighter around the valve stem than they do around the valve guide tower on the head. Clearly, when I start this thing up the seals are going to be flying up and down with the valve as opposed to the valve stem moving up and down through them. Is this the way they are designed to operate?

Confused in Canada

I have a stupid ? I think I know but I do not want to mess up my new engine. On the umbrella seals, I just got a set in today and im looking at them the seal set comes with 8 umbrell seals and 8 regular style seals does the umbrella style go on the intake valves and the other go on the exhuast or the opposite

I'm not sure what you're calling "regular"....but I know the shorter seals go on the exhaust valves. (That's how it was on my slant)
