There's about 1/2 of a plastic speedometer pinion still in my 1963 904 trans.
I got one piece with tweezers and intend to fish out some more piece(s).
It may be a single piece or a few.

My first thought is that one these pieces could get bounced and chew up the new pinion.

Can plastic gear fragments travel inside the trans and damage/block other internal parts, or will they be limited to the tail-end section of the trans?

For those who have taken apart an early 904, where do these pieces end up?

A big piece will never make it into the main case, the drain-back hole on a early 904 is pretty small.

This sound like a "run it and see what happens" kind of situation.
The biggest risk is that the piece will get caught in the park pawl lever assy.

If a piece is stuck in the parking pawl assembly, what can be done to fix it?
Is there a way to access this assembly with the transmission in the car?

I think a piece is in the park pawl assembly.
Out of the blue, the park lever won't go all the way up.
You can hear light rubbing of gear teeth while driving slow.

UPDATE:
I removed the pushbutton assy from the dash.
It works perfectly with the parking cable unhooked, but the lever won't go up properly with it connected.
The cable is pulled when the lever goes up.
Yesterday the cable could be pulled about 1/4 inch farther than it can now.
