I have a 68 dart with a round back alt.(one wire) I'd like to use a chrome square back.(2 wires) But every time I put it on I blow out the voltage regulator. I was told to ground the one field.I have electronic ignition & now have electronic voltage regulator (silver box). Thanks, any help would be appreciated.

Joe i will ask the alternator spec. at the shop tomorrow about your problem. I do for a fact the voltage reg. has to have a good ground are it will blow as soon as it loses its ground thanks Ron

Joe, I told the alternator spec at the shop about your problem. Here is his advice. Put the ignition to field, not ground. Run wire from regulator to the other field on the alt. Let me know if that solves the problem Thanks Ron

I had a similar problem recently after changing my engine. Hooked up the alternator and got over charging ok, bad regulator, bought a new cheap one same problem. Ok I must have got a bad one. Bought one made in the USA. Same problem, over charging. I'm ready to buy a internally regulated alternator at this point, hook up one wire to the battery and be done with it.Well, before I spent the money decided to check out the wiring one more time. On my dodge truck (78) there is the ignition resistor with 2 pairs of lugs on it. The red regulator wire is connected to one of these plugs. There are plastic posts designed to match recesses in the resistor, however I was able to put them in the wrong position anyway. The regulator was only getting 6 volts! So of course the thing had the alternator going full bore all the time. All the regulators were good. Don't know if this is your problem. Hope it helps someone. Like how many spare regulators dose a guy need? Bruce
