i'm trying to pull my trans apart a833od (it was rebuilt about 10 years ago and sat so i'm freshening it all up)and I don't see how you get the extension housing off i'm thinking their is a snap ring in their up by the drive pinion but I don't want to remove anything and have small parts go flying everywhere. Also I have a set of shift rods and they look to line up but I hear their is a special lever and rod for the "3-od" I was wondering what would happen if I used the rod I have compared to the rod i need (the only reason I ask is I need to get this trans in my car soon it is my daily driver and the auto trans is slipping really bad I think I only have a week or 2 before my auto goes up completely) also if anyone has a pic of this set up with the shifter mounted up and all the rods hooked up I would be forever grateful any help would be appreciated

The complete output shaft, extension housing and gears all come out of the case as a big 'chunk', then you dis-assemble / remove the extension housing. Small parts will come loose as you do this.

The od Units Need to have the Counter Shaft removed belore you can pull the Output shaft / Housing / And Cluster. It's not like the other 833's where you can pull out that section without removing the countershaft.


A Service manual is a great thing to use during this procedure - Get one for a 79 Aspen or volare - It also shoud show the rod ald lever orentation.

I did order a aspen service manual but I think I might need to put the 4 speed in before it gets here ( the estimated delivery is 2 weeks from now and my auto trans is slipping really bad)

Despite having the manual and some other great print resources, I still had little parts fly beacause the directions were written for someone who knew what they were doing and knew of some pitfalls.

To avoid one real hassle, when you pull the output shaft and its gears out, hold onto the synchros and their gears.! You won't see a seeming disaster coming til these parts slip apart and they do so in an instant. No problem to put back together, just something you would rather avoid having happen.

I use a thin gage wire (like on a parts tag) to literally slide through mine and hold everything in place til I am ready to take them apart for cleaning. You also need some quality snap ring pliers because the snap rings are very strong. And you need one BIG snap ring plier to get out the ring out that holds the housing to the case. I got mine at harbor Freight.

I don't consider this to be a complex tranny like a 12 speed. I have done several 833's and never did a 4 speed before doing my first 833. Come to think of it if you have or can get hold of a junker 3 speed of about any make take it apart. It will have a lot of the same parts to practice on.
