OK...

I have all of the pistons out of the engine now.
There was nothing serously out of whack except for one compression ring being broken.

I measured my rod bearing clearances and they were all at .006". I think this is too much. I believe the factory spec is .001" to .002", so I'll have to replace the bearings.

Also, what was weird was that the pistons were very hard to turn on the wrist pin, and did not slide back and forth on the wrist pin, until I oiled them and worked them back and forth until they loosened up. They shouldn't be this way, should they?

I also found at the edge of the compression rings were very sharp- with a serious "edge" to them. Someone told me this means they are worn out- is this correct?

They're getting replaced no matter what at this point.

The wrist pins will have "crud" build-up on all exposed surfaces, which will not allow full/free motion untill the crud is cleaned-off. It sounds like you successfully cleaned off the build-up by 'working' the pins in the pistons.

Time to start measuring everything, especially the ring grooves in the pistons, the grooves can get worn to the wide side and prevent new rings from sealing well.

Also check cylinder wear. A cone shaped cylinder flexes the rings on every cycle and that causes them to break.
