hi sl6 sages- i had for 29 years a 77 aspen sl6 . nj winters turned it into a rust flake. other thanthat it was my best car since i stepped on my first clutch pedal in 63. trying to determine the significant differences between it and my latest acquisition ,an 80 volare sl6. both look sound and drive the same , have mechanical valves and seem to have the same power. the books dont state any differences but seem to lack detail. the 80 differs by having two cats and a return to the one barrel carb(the 77 had a super six two barrel carb). are you fine folks aware of any other differnces i should be aware of. the 80 aspen volare had much lower production figures than any year since f body inception in 76(slantsix news magazine).this unpopularity of the 80 models probably accounts for the lack of info on it.one strange thing was that the 77 two barrel had better rated mileage than the 80 one barrel. one other question which has been touched on in the forum. thinking of putting a 77 single cat exhaust system on the 80 replacing the two cat system and getting rid of the air pump, when the 80 system conks or rusts out. no emissions testing here in most of fla like in the northeast. interested in your recommendations and info if you have experience with this. thanks tons bf

If you have no emissions testing at all, just eliminate the cats all together, and put the 2bbl on the 80. :D

Yeah.... I agree with Dennis on that one. As far as prod. numbers go on the various year F bodies, the only ones I seem to remember pertain to '78s (RRs, SCs, Kit cars, etc) On one of the F body sites (Jason's or maybe Farley's??) I remember coming across a rundown of year by year
numbers, but dont remember them. Whats weird is that as low as the numbers were 0n 80s, back when F bodies were still commonly seen on the roads, that seems right. Yet now that I'm doing an 80 myself, it seems like when I do see one on the road or on Ebay, it seems like the 80s weren't as scarce as youd think 20-some years after the fact.

Took the 34,000 orignal mile slant 6 one barrel out of my 80 Aspen and transplanted it in my 79 Super Six Aspen. I removed the Super Six intake/carb setup off my 79's orignal motor and installed it on the 80 engine when I installed it back into the 79. The 80 1 barrel which ran great would always get 18 miles per gallon. Once in my 79 with my Super Six intake/carb on it I'm getting 22 mpg with it. You were asking about the differences in the engines their self between 77 and 80 I'd say there is no differences you'd ever notice. I know my 79 and 80 both had the same casting numbers on the heads. Maybe a compression ratio difference but I doubt it.
