Very dissapointing turnout for the slant six race. Saturday had only four cars. Clint Boyt-74 Duster, Brien Radly-65 Valiant, Norm Foster-Mitsu/Challenger, and myself-66 Valiant. Norm had some valve train issued, while doing a burnout for his first time shot, and had to shut it off. He elected not to race, till the problem is cured, so that left just 3 cars. I had a red light 1st round, so that left Clint and Brien to fight it out, for the win. Clint got the win. PS: Ron Parker did get there, but time trials were already over, and he had not run the car this year, so he deceided to wait till sunday.

Sunday was slightly better with 5 cars making 1st round. Same three as Saturday, with the addition of Ron Parker-69 Dart, and Erik Ievens-64 Valiant. 1st round, Brian Radley took out Erik Ievens, Clint Boyt took me out, and Ron Parker got the bye. 2nd round Parker took out Radley, with Boyt getting the bye. Final was a double breakout between Parker and Boyt, with Parker getting the win.

Bummer about the low turnout though, was the weather forecast bad?

A wins a win besides thats 40 points. I have been to rainouts almost one freezeout at Columbus Tornado warnings. But never a smokeout. The inside of my truck smells like a forrest fire. At times you almost not read the score board at the 1/4 finisf line. I think a couple of factors hurt attendance. The whole number of cars there was about halve as last year.But we had a goodtime and Charlie worked hard on this show and it was a 1000 dollar purse. Thanks Charlie :D

I do want to thank the racers, that came to support the race. Norm wasn't able to run, but he came down. Also Slant Cecil, and Jerry Dearolf, were unable to get their cars ready, but came to the track.

Sorry yall had such a poor turnout, I think the smoke hurt the turnout for the whole show, at least that is what I have been hearing from some of my mopar club members.

It was a pleasure to be your tech guy but the only tech suggestion I made was you needed some ice for the Bud Light. :D
Sorry I got behind with my new car and couldn't bring it, next year I'll be there with 1, maybe 2, slant sixers.

Well, a report is better late than never, I suppose. :) I'm finally uncovering myself from all that's felt burying.

Thanks to Charlie for all the hard work organizing the event. I was disappointed that I've done NO fine tuning on this engine, and in fact I arbitrarily backed the timing off about 2 degrees when i got to the track because I'd heard a little bit of pinging on the way there. That's simply not my style... I'm used to logging all sorts of details in a notebook and calibrating to the Nth degree.

This was only my second time on a track (the first being a year ago at this same event), and I flunked out of the competition on the first round. It was a little disappointing, but nothing insurmountable... I realized I just really have no idea how to launch this car, since that's not the way I normally drive it. And a little tiny motor with a slight bog in the carburetor launches waaaaaay differently than any performance V8 machine I've become used to over the years.

But then I picked myself up and said, "Wait a minute, I drove 150 miles to get here, paid to get in, and now they're telling me I'm done for the day? I don't think so!" I politely asked the guys in charge if they'd let me do exhibition runs, to practice, and they proceeded to squeeze me in every time there was a lull in their schedule, between different classes of vehicles. The track announcer had a field day pointing out my little putt-putt car over and over, figured I was doing my best to see if I could break it. Hey, after 8 more attempts, using the muffler noise for an audible tachometer and never losing my grandma-style shifting, I actually got this 3-speed pig to move at about 19.4 seconds or so, which impressed me. Had fun, didn't break anything, drove it home again, got about 25 mpg for the day.

Charlie pointed out that it would have been quicker if I'd bothered to unload all the tools and spare parts from the trunk. {grin} So, along with all the trucks on the interstate, I stopped by the weigh station on the way home and talked really nicely to the gal operating the scales, told her what I was trying to learn... she actually came outside and looked at the car, asked me what all the numbers in shoe polish meant... it was a slow day, apparently. ;)

I found out that, perhaps a 1/4 of a tank after I'd left the track, the car was 3120 lbs with me in it. Weight distribution 53/47.
