PostPosted: Mon May 13, 2002 8:42 am
Morning,
I'm new to the board and was sent here because of a problem with my '85 Dodge /6 pickup. I believe the computer is shot because the timing is not advancing with engine RPM.
Someone suggested sticky weights in the dist. (why have 'em with computers?). If I can't locate a pre-owned computer reasonably, I'll drop in a points dist. Any thoughts or arm-chair diagnosis out there?

Thanks for the help.

i have an 85 6 that had the spark control computer also(now long gone). you probably have the holley 1945 1bbl on there right now right? you would be please with swapping to a super six set up(2bbl carter and a 2bbl intake) or a non emission holley 1920 1bbl for now. at least that way you can convert to electronic ignition first. i don't know how well the 1945 would work without the scc.(the only thing in your distributor now is a single magnetic pick-up, no weights and your vacuum diaphram is on the scc)
all that said you can get a vacuum advance distributor for an 85 an your local parts store for 35-45 bucks. it has your wieghts and a single magnetic pick-up(don't want points) a ballast resistor(if using the stock coil) for 4 bucks. pick up an hei control module for a 66 chevelle with straight six for 15 bucks, go to goldusters web site to get the wiring diagram, you can find him at slantsix.com. you can use the mopar ecu wich is around 40 bucks and the wiring is a little more difficult. this will get rid of your leanburn junk and give you the bulletproof electronic ignition. when you pull the scc figure out all your wiring so you know what you do and don't need. yank the canister, airpump and all your hard vacuum lines through the engine compartment. when you take off the air pump you will need to block the hole at the back of the head off. it's hard to see but it's there. get all your parts together figure you out a plan of attack and get up early one saturday morning and enjoy working on your truck for the whole day(two days if you do the super six swap but thats another story).

Wish I could do that with my 80 Volare. I do have an extra control module, but not sure if it would work on your 85. I have the Holley 1945 I think. Unfortunately , emmission regulations make it illegal for any mods....

Before you junk the computer make sure that it is getting the proper inputs. The timing advance is calculated from RPM, manifold vacuum, temp, throttle position, and maybe something else, I forget.
The computer won't advance the timing if:
1. Carb switch is grounded
Normally anything above idle will open the carb switch, but maybe it is shorted somewhere else.
2. Zero vacuum at vacuum sensor
The spark computer works off manifold vacuum, not ported vacuum like a vacuum advance distributor. It should have strong vacuum on sensor to measure advance due to RPMs. Make sure you have full vacuum at idle and revved.
3. Temp sensor is open.
I think a "cold" sensor (high resistance?) will delay advance

I'll check the manual tonight to see if I missed something.
Good Luck

Thanks for the help guys. I won't have a chance to play with it until the week end.

Re: Emmisions. In this state we don't have the tail pipe test yet. When my exhaust needed replacing I took the two 32" glass-paks off my 318 '52 Dodge and welded them in series under the /6. Nice sound, not too loud, still have pedal at 60mph.
I may go for the super 6 swap. Parts for the Holley 1945 are harder to come by.
