Hey everyone.
Well i messed up. And i know it very well. See i have what i like to call a 'left-right deficiency,' so when using the righty tighty, lefty loosey rule, i sometimes get it messed up, but when the bolt gets hard to turn i usually realize my error.
Anyways, today i was installing my new KYB shocks, and I got the front ones on fine, it all was good. I got the lower mount nuts off the back shocks, and then trouble. I must've righty-tightied when i should've lefty-loosied on the top mounts. Any which way, now the nuts turn, but they don't go anywhere.
I'm hoping that i didn't kill the shock mount threads, because that would make me a very unhappy camper, but any tips on how to get the nuts off if in fact they are the problem (as i suspect they are)? I tried using a wedge and my wrench, which didn't work, and now the only thing i can think of is to grind them off, any other suggestions?

I've found that the nuts are usually softer than the studs so you just end up messing up the nuts.........

Worst case is a localized thread stripping on the stud which washers can solve by putting the nut on good thread (I'd get new nuts)

As for getting them off, you need try to pry them off while loosening them.

When something like that happens to me I sometimes use a screwdriver to pry upward on the nut while turning it. It will usually back on off. Sometimes you can squeeze the nut just a bit and it will bite and back out. Good luck.

The shock mount nuts did the same thing on my 68 Dart a few weeks ago.

After getting the nuts removed I ran a die down the studs to clean up the threads, then used new nuts.

Holding nicely, thank you.

(And the KYB's are great!)

Good to know that I'm not the only one who things like this happen to.
How did you get yours off, Slanted Opinion?
I tried the screwdriver method, and the nut splitter (which i torqued using a breaker bar and a 5 ft long wooden shovel handle. i torqued it until i could not physically torque any more). The nut did not come off in either instance.
Any other suggestions?

Actually, the nuts came off for me using an air wrench... it was after they came off that I noticed the nuts and studs were boogered up.

Is your nut splitter sharp?

I'd probably go with a grinder at this point. Just be careful to cut only the nut.

Well the nut splitter is brand new (like as of four hours ago) so it should be. How hard should i have to crank it to get the damn thing to split?
I think i will go with the grinder at this point.
