Yesterday I replaced the valve cover gasket on my slant and now it seems as if my engine has an "out of balance" shake to it at very low RPM's.

Now, I doubt that something is out of balance, I think I crossed one of the vacuum lines up with a different one. Something isn't right, tho.

Help!

Well, your '71 does have at least two hoses running to the crankcase breather (at the back of the valve cover), one large-diameter line that runs from the PCV valve to the base of the carb, and another large-diameter line that runs from the body of the fuel pump to the top of the carb....

Did you Take off any of the plug Wires in the process??

I have crossed wires and It gave me the effect you describe.

It sounds like a plug wire is just off at one end or the other. If they are crossed you will very often get a back fire, either through the exhaust or carb. . If a spark plug wire is disconnected, then you get a foomp, foomp foomp sound in the exhaust as well. You could have a plug wire that is grounding out, and firing to ground before the plug can spark.

I'll check all of those things out.

This is what I did yesterday:

Drained oil and changed filter. I may have bumped the distributor when changing the oil?

I then pulled the valve cover to change the gasket. What a pain!! The cork material was glued on, as well as covered in RTV sealant. I used a little parabond and a new rubber gasket.

I think I put all the hoses back in the right order. Everything looks good. But I did notice that when I start my car, it idles higher and I have to kickdown the throttle to get it to run at a normal operating rpm.

I'm hoping I can get some help at work tomorrow. We have a couple of former Chrysler tech's on our staff.

Did you adjust the valve lash while the valve cover was off?
(you should have at least checked it once the cove was off)
