I read in an article about adapting the later voltage limiter to an early dash to fix inop gauges. My fuel guage is either not working very much or not at all. The temp guage seems to be okay, maybe a bit low. The article said that if they are not completely dead, then the fix may not be completely successful.

Is there a way to intentionally destroy the fuel guage so that the fix will be 100% successful?

You should be able to burn out the internal regulator by putting 12v between the ignition terminal and the regulator "out" terminal of the gauge. Be ready for smoke! I have not tried this, but I have seen the inside of the gauge and the bi-metal regulator is between these two terminals. You can test the internal regulator output by connecting 12v to the ignition terminal and grounding the gauge. You should then be able to read the regulator voltage between the "output" terminal and ground. When working properly the output voltage should pulse about 4v every second.
