I know your not supposed to do this - the fsm indicates it will weaken the axle - but what happens if you do?

I recall years ago I had a shop remove the stock bearings from my 8 3/4" axles and press on the green sealed bearings. I had asked them if I could see the old bearings and they said theres nothing left of them as they torched them off. All they handed me were the flanges.

Could they of weakened the axle, made it warp, or tweak the axle flange? I'm at the point I need to get new bearings but I don't know if I should get new axles too. I don't mind spending the money for them if I should, but I would rather not just throw it away if I don't need to.

If they were careful they probably didn't hurt anything.

The retainer is easy to split with a cold chisel, and the bearing can be driven off with a drift and a hammer.
