Well, I think you found "a website with tons of free technical advice". . . here and at the slantsix.com site. You need to use the seach function and do some reading. I would search for valve adjustment, tune-up & timing advance or advance curve because this is what you need to start with.
With a basic engine tune-up, advancing the timing and making sure the distributor advance is working well (read: lots of initual & a fast curve rate)a SL6 will wake-up. Also adjust the valves and carb accelerator pump / jetting to get even more pep.
So pick one of these topics, use the site's search and read-up, post / ask questions so you feel good about doing the task and go for it! Knock-out a tune-up then move to let's say, a valve adjustment using the same process.
You will be doing the "big stuff" before you know it!
