I don't understand why pumping the pedal helped you out. That is an action that helps when things are fuel starved. You might consider getting a mini starter. The ones advertized for a small block will fit.

Not pumping the pedal, but holding it to the floorboard while cranking. This opens the throttle wide, allowing a large amount of air in to sweep-out the excess fuel. It is standard practice for clearing a flooded engine.

Nothing wrong with a mini starter, but it'll just mask the symptom, not fix the problem. Whenever possible, I prefer to fix problems rather than mask symptoms.

I don't know how to use the "quote" feature here, but this is a copy and paste of his third post. I was just quoting him about pumping the pedal.

"I have the Dutra duals. I guess that would make sense. I have to pump the gas pedal a lot to get it to start when hot. I did put a 3/8" heat insulator gasket between the manifold and the carb. That was as thick as I could fit unless I wanted to cut a hole in the hood."

Yes you are right, fixing the problem is the best idea. I was not suggesting it as a cure, but just a nice improvement to the slant. All the carb mods are the place to start, and get the fuel worked out rightl

If you want to give me a sort tutorial on using the quote feature, that would be nice. I just don;t know what you do first, second, etc.

Oh lookit there, he did say "pump", didn't he. I guess I must have read what he meant rather than what he typed :lol: You're right, pumping the gas would only worsen the hard-start problem.

If you click the "quote" button instead of the "reply" button, the entire text of the message you just clicked the button on will be enclosed within the quote. The quote button cannot be used to quote more than one message at a time, or messages from another thread. However, you can manually put whatever text you want inside a quote box by simply using the [qüote] ... [/qüote] or [qüote="name of who said what you're quoting"] ... [/qüote] markup elements. Just type them in manually if you want (and leave the umlauts off the "u" in "quote"...I just put them in here so that the markup elements would show up "raw" rather than getting processed into quote boxes when the board looks at this what I've written and decides how to display it.)

I could be wrong here, but when the fuel "boils" out of the carb due to heat, wouldn't this create a fuel starved condition? Would I be better off just holding the pedal down? It seems to start better if I pump it, but I haven't had to deal with this more than a couple of times yet. (BTW, I know I would be better off fixing the problem, but in the meantime :) ).

I do have a mini starter, when the car is cool to cold, a mere bump to the key starts it. When it is really hot and been sitting more than a couple of minutes, it can take up to 10 seconds.

No. The fuel mostly boils out of the carb and into the intake manifold/cylinders (fuel vapour being heavier than air). It creates a thoroughly flooded condition.
