Living 5 hours from the nearest dragstrip means finding other ways to test performance.

0-60 times are only useful if you have an accurate speedo....and really only tell half the story on a highway car.

I hav the room to "top end " the car but still need the accurate speedo.

How useful are the G Tech type meters? Are the 1/4 mile times accurate?
Are some better than others? What do they cost?

Everybody I have talked to says there inaccurate, however I own a Belltronics FX-1 performance computer which is basicly a G-tech type of tool and find mine to be very consitant. Bought mine 3 year ago was about $250ish. I think its great.

I used the 1st gen G-tech meter for a while and it correlated well with drag runs, BUT it got pretty far out of whack somehow and was giving me wrong times. I just gave up on it and never tried to replace.

Would consider getting a newer one, esp if you could download runs to a computer via USB.

All the drag racers in my area love theirs and have said the worst they were off was .3 sec (calibration is key to getting the best reading). I like mine, but here's what you have to know:

1) you have to calibrate the new ones on a flat surface (people seem to not check the surface with a level

2) you have to do the test on a flat road (I have a specific country test road I did my tests on)

3) you have to know the weight of your car when the run occurs (so driving out to a weigh station and then to your test road means replacing any burnt gas so you aren't off by a few pounds...)

4) get the model that lets you download the runs to your computer, the software will let you see your rpm vs. torque curve, shift points, etc...


The new SS model I hear won't let you download anything without another $$$ for the upgrade I hear...

All in all if you read the instructions, and follow them to the letter, it will be close to having a real world dyno without paying the $50/hr prices (so make sure to run the track 'both ways' to eliminate any wind problems....
and don't get caught by the cops...)

The cheap and simple devices if cal is correct can be a useful tool to A B performance ... Keep in mind that at the track you have roll out and the MPH will differ as well due to the fact that the G tech " runs out the back door" ...
