I was sitting on the think tank reading an older issue of mopar muscle and came across and article about the bolts on the A-bodies that hold the steering componits to the spindal and that they fail. Has this happened to anyone of is it a pile of bulls*&t? If so, does ARP make a replacement for these bolts?

Whats strange about that article is that Mr. Erhenberg (who wrote that article) was selling replacement bolts on ebay a couple days later....

Was that his article about the bolts on 9" spindles breaking off? :?

I don't follow E-booger too much, so I may be out of the loop on this one.

The lower ball joint to spindle bolts are common parts-bin fasteners. When I rebuilt my Dart's front suspension I just grabbed some Grade 8s from the local hardware store.

Hoboy. That's gotta be the one where he said "We personally wouldn't drive an A-body with 9" drums over 40mph. The ball joint bolts are known to break!".

BS, BS, BS.

Did Ehrenberg write for Mopar Muscle? Not that it matters ...

I'd like to know where to get those bolts too. The originals are slightly tapered, use castellated nuts and cotter pins. I can't seem to find replacements anywhere.

Yes, I can find grade 8 bolts the same length and thread pitch at any hardware/h.i. store, but not with pin holes, tapered like the originals and those wacky castle nuts. No dice at Auto Zone, Napa, etc.

People have told me they're easy to find. I disagree.

Enlighten me!

Huh. Maybe a previous owner had swapped the ones on my '66 out or they'd changed by then, because they weren't castelated, tapered, or cotter-pinned, just standard bolts.

I have seen them both ways, but most of the ones I have disassembled just had clinch nuts on them.

My 10" drums had the holes in the spindles threaded too, along with clinch nuts.

The original (or at least what I believe to be original) bolts I have are threaded only halfway up the shank.

Anyone have any ideas on where to at least find the castle nuts? That's really the part that gets chewed up. The bolts themselves are good.

Castle nuts would seem like an Auto Zone no-brainer, but when I asked for them, all I got from the counter dorks were blank stares and questions like 'what kind of car is that'?

Home Depot and Lowes have assortments of hardware with a variety of nuts, washers, bushings, etc. You might be able to find it there. Also, some parts stores have bins of parts that you can look through. Finally, a nut and bolt store should be able to hook you up.

Anyplace that has a Dorman selection will have castellated nuts. NAPA stores usually do.

If you can't find castellated nuts, just use 2, the second acts as a jam nut.....
