The 65 Dart Service Manual indicates "Camshaft Thrust Taken by Engine Block" and provides no end play spec for the 225 slant.

The same manual does provide end play for the V8's at .010.

When I rotate my 225 distributor rotor by hand (with the head off)I can see the cam moving almost 20 times the V8 end play(3/16).

Is this large cam end play a problem for my 65:?:

I actually lost the bushing out of my timing gear (luckily 1 block from home) because the cam 'walked'. Doc has a quick post on how to make a cam stop to keep it in place. Use the search function and look for 'cam stop' by Doc*

I now do this to any slant I'm building.

A SL6 flat tappit cam has a taper on all the lobes which forces the cam rearward. The distributor / oil pump drive gear also pulls the cam rearward so in theory, the top (cam) timing gear will always be pulled up against the block surface.

I have see evidance that says otherwise... like a big rub mark on the inside of the timing chain cover.
To be sure the cam stays where it should, I weld in a stop made from a rockerarm adjustment ball screw.
