Been absent awhile.I picked up a 78 kurbmaster to use as a car hauler ,350chev, I've been getting into solar lately ,high voltage arrays.Ive got an air compressor and cooling powerd by the sun and I'm toying with the idea of powering the ALT,Waterpump, Power stearing/brake pump with a 5/8"shaft former harddrive moter I picked up at a flea market. just a new idea I'm not in hibited to place on this receptive forum Bruce J

Well, if you're going to make electricity directly I wouldn't bother using it to run a motor to drive the alternator. What I'd probably do first is just try and meet the electrical needs of the vehicle with the solar and just loose the alternator. If the solar keeps up fine then maybe drive something else.

Your air compressor and AC, are they for your home or the van?

Oops, just realized we should be discussing this in a different section of the forum.

This could apply to any engine including the slant six your right about loosing the alt and would be a good spot to mount the moter As for the proper place to post this how much HP/ mileage could be gained if the engine did not have to drive AC ,ALT, Waterpump, Fan ,power stering/ brake pump ,even oil pump?if all this was powered by the sun. Granted I have a freek'n bread truck with a roof area enough to mount 10 of the Kaneka panels I have, so keeping up is not an issue. So I'm throwing this Idea to the slanted eyed dogs ,Rip away.......I'm running on Propane I get for $2.00 a gallon so I allready won. I need to find your propane retailer! Road tax?

So how 'bout shooting a URL for the panels. I don't know if I'd want to drive around with a bunch of panels sticking up from the roof of my Valiant. Most of the high output panels I've seen have been a wee bit pricey and large.
Cool thought though. Big battery for the dark half of the clock?

Need more info to make a judgment of any sort.

How much do they weigh? Dimensions? VAmps?

CJ

you must of course pay road tax, enough of that, still its nice burning a clean fuel with no hydro carbons and I whould not encourage you to spoil the looks of your valiant with a scaffold of solar panels however my van was bought to carry a valiant sized car to carshows . Could not afford a enclosed trailer and a tow truck B J
