Talked to a guy there. I think his name was Larry. It started with the letter L. Anyway that guy is highly anoying. My call started out asking about offset bushings and ofcourse he wanted to know how and why I am 5.5* advanced with a stock type roller chain. He asked lots of other questions too and the conversation degraded from there. I admit I don't know everything but please mister. I was doing everything wrong. Wrong intake, cam, carb, exhaust. I got the impression that if it wasn't Clifford it was wrong. Lets break down some of what I was told to get clearifaction.
1. intakes
It has been my impression that the Offy intake is more of a torquer and the Clifford is more of a high RPM one. Right or wrong.
2. Distributors.
I have a stock NOS electronic that is suppost to have a pretty good curve in it. I don't know the governor stamping but its one of the Feather Duster one if that means anything. Anyway he say mine is to slow and I should get one of the Mallory Lite ones? part# 4562201. At first I thought he was saying that my curve is not quick enough but thats not what he was saying. It the mag pickup thats not quick enough and the Mallory has a Hall effect pickup that is quicker and so much better. Something about cylinder 1 might fire on time but cylinder 4 or 3 (the next one) would be late and can cause pinging. One thing that seems suspect with this theory is that late, if possible, would = less likely to ping.
3. Camshaft
240 duration which I have and .518 lift is way to big and is a high rpm cam. He suggests something like a 206ish and a .480ish cam for the street.
Your thoughts on any of this.

You Talked to Larry Millwee. He is/was Jack Cliffords son-in-law. My opinion: Don't believe 95% of what he says, and question the other 50%.

AS for offset cam bushings, go to your local spped shop and get a set for a Chevy (cheaper).

My statements are my opinion, only.

If you need headers, call him up, and talk to Larry (he's the boss). Ask if the headers are in stock, and when they will ship. Pay with a credit card, if the time frame is acceptable, and tell him, if you have not recieved them by a certain day (allowing for reasonable shipping time), you will cancel the order, and put the amount in dispute with the credit card company. If the headers are not in stock and there will be a delay in shipping, tell him not to charge your credit card, untill they are ready to ship. This covers your butt, and stops any BS.

It is really a shame, it is necessary to do business, this way. I delt with Clifford for 20 years, and Jack always was a nice person to deal with. Afer he eased up with the day to day hands on dealing, things started going downhill. When he died, the company went to hell in a handbag. I don't know if the other inline brands are haveing the same type of problems.

what else do we have for slant six though?

clifford, offy, and erson (if you want your oil hole in your cam to not line up right). thats all I can think of. you can get generic rebuild kits pretty easy, but hi-po stuff you have to get creative.

back to the original questions:

for question #1, I am not qualified to answer.

but in answer to #2 of Bren67Cuda904 questions, yes, the "general" consensus is offy is slightly more low end and clifford is slightly more high end; torque wise. I belive there was a debate about it having to do with the runners some time ago.

for an answer to #3, I think it all depends on head mods and compression numbers for which cam is correct, so saying something is "just for racing" based just on it has a .480 lift is questionable. I think it depends on how much you are willing to put up with the marbles-in-a-garbage-can sound more than anything.

remember, I had been told many, many times that 4 barrel and headers were going to "kill" my mileage and low end torque, but I still got 25 MPG and left them all at the light.

Well in my opinion that guy you chatted with just made an @** of himself.
Its not surprising to me either that he was trying to push clifford products by automatically saying what you are running is crap.

#1..Im not 100% on that myself

#2 In my testings the offenhausers proved to excellent street intakes providing ample torque. The cliffords seem to be better for the higher rpms though. The weiand intake although tough to find performs well also. I figure he doesnt know whats going on because how could any of these be worse than stock.

#3 I have to disagree on this issue because Lou (dart270) and dennis (slantzilla) have ran cams that big or bigger on the street with no problems. If I could afford another big cam and a converter big enough to support Id do it to!

Oh..Forgot to address the distributor issue he mentioned. I disagree there to. I have a mallory and it's a top notch piece but it should be for the $325.00 I paid for it two years ago  Then again thats gonna be used on my drag car that Im building up. For my fairly mild street slant Im using a mallory hyfire ignition (cheaper and works as good as MSD )and a STOCk yes stock distributor! It's turned a 10.85 in the 1/8 with a bone stock short block and untouched head using 3.55 gears. Problems with stock distributor? NO. Problem with buy my overpriced stuff and wonder if you will get it?? There could be a problem....

1. Of course anything you have that is not what Larry has to sell will be wrong.

2. I have personally tested a Clifford intake against an Offy with the same carb, on the same car. The Offy has more low end, they are about even in the mid range, and the Clifford is better above 4500.

3. I have run 12.00@110 with a stock Mopar distributor and an MSD6-AL. Pickup too slow? Gimme a freaking break. The only thing too slow is Larry's service.

4. You've got 260 cubes and valves that are huge. Put some cam in it.

You did put a looser converter in didn't you Bren? That will settle down a big camshaft.

I would like to congratulate you for staying with this project. We gave you a pretty good beating and still you stuck around. I have much respect for that. :D :D :D
