Hey,

I've been looking around alot for what kinda of intake/card configurations to try on my 64' valiant. I'm interested in the offy double carb manifold with two singles, or a 2 barrel carb setup. Any one know the pros/cons of the two setups? I understand that the Valiant GT (argentinan or australian model i think) used 2 single barrel carbs with decent power, but the 2 barrel seems more conventional.

Thanks,

Aaron

Both setups can be made to run well. Each has its own set of "gotchya" points and its own set of advantages. To make the twin 1bbl setup work well, you have to have two 1bbl carbs in excellent condition and very precisely matched and identically tuned/synchronised. The linkage hookup is easier in a '64 with the 2x 1bbl, though. Tuning and carb sourcing is easier with the 1x 2bbl (since it's only one carb), but linkage is more of a hassle in a '64 and it doesn't look as cool under the hood. It's really down to what parts you have available, how much of what kind of work you want to do, and how readily you can find suitable carbs.

Its far easier in Brutish Columbia (....is that near Belize?) to find a 2 barrell setup off an old Aspen or truck.

Look for an early 80s slant truck,,,,,,with aluminum intake and 2 barrell carb.

Belay that order!

The 2bbl intakes were made in aluminum and iron. Read this, this, and this; you may decide it's wiser to pick the iron one.

You can also convert your 1bbl intake into a 2bbl for parallel carb mounting, which makes the linkage hookup easier in a '64. See here (pdf).

It is also possible to convert the dual 1bbl manifold to a dual 2bbl.

Seriously though, while twin carbs looks really cool, they are a pain in the @ to tune properly whethe 1 or 2 bbl.

Regardless of the paranoia about the aluminum 2bbl intake it is a good piece when not borked. Check for leaks and cracks.

I don't care how much extra tinkering is involved with each setup, i just want to know if theres any performance differences.

They can both be set up to give pretty equal performance.

Performance increases on a slant can all be traced back to headwork. A 2 barrel ( done either way) is plenty of carb for most applications.

Given the same CR , headwork and cam both should perform equally.
