What is better the brass or the steel for freeze plugs. Any one now where I can get a set napa only sells the steel ones.

Steel is fine if you keep antifreeze in the engine. Most pre-packaged Mopar block plug kits have shallow soft plugs. If you want to do it up nice buy the brass ones in the deep style and just use the threaded plugs from a steel plug kit.

The SL6 freeze plug size is 1 5/8, Dorman, CXD & Pick-A-Nut all make the deep brass version.
Many times I buy a "brand X" kit that has the correct size main plug but also a few extra plugs that get tossed into the coffee can. Many discount auto parts stores carry these kits.

thanks for the info. My main worry is that I be running at 10:1. I was told that the steel plugs have a bad habit of blowing out

I don't understand what the compression ratio has to do with the freeze plugs. The water jacket doesn't see the cylinder pressure.

Growing older is unavoidable but growing up is strictly optional.

A brass plug will blow out before a steel one if both are installed properly. The steel plugs have better spring propertes so they keep their grip in the hole better. The only advantage to brass is better corrosion resistance.
And yes, compression has nothing to do with it.
