I spoke with an engineer acquaintance of mine at Standard Motor Products yesterday, as a followup to my e-mail to him of about 2 weeks ago. Standard bought Echlin a couple years ago, and recently the MO-3000 became N/A. In that e-mail, I explained the advantage of the MO-3000 and asked about the possibility of bringing it back.

Yesterday's phone call went well: "Yeah, it won't be a problem. As soon as we find the die for the longer brass contact, we'll run several years worth of 'em and put them in our warehouse."

He's going to keep me up to date on the progress. Looks like this one should become available again before long.

I have one new and one slightly used if anyone wants them - Only thing my distributor is doing now is covering up the hole so oil doesn't get out.

Dan, you never cease to amaze me. First it's finding the right hard-to-find parts, and now you're actually getting a major manufacturer to do a production run of a discontinued part.

Now any chance you could talk Chrysler into a production run of front fenders and rear quarters for '74 Dusters? :lol:

Longer contact segment = smaller gap between rotor and cap contacts, which means you can widen the plug gap, which gives smoother running, better driveability & economy. Also less RFI and longer cap & rotor life (less burning)

Here's a question, I had read on here somewhere that the 3000 rotor was good but the cap from echling wasn't? Or am I wrong? If its so what cap do you recommend and what points? Thanks -Dan

Virtually every Echlin cap I've seen recently for the slant six has been ground off-center. I had a parts store clerk who was rather shocked by this bring out a second Echlin cap along with a Standard cap, and sure enough, the second one had the same problem.

When snapping-up remaining stock on the MO-3000, be sure you're getting what you think you're getting. See this post. MO-3000 is tan and has a long contact. MO-13 (the ordinary rotor sometimes reboxed in an MO-3000 box) is white with a short contact.

As for Echlin caps: Yup, they're ground off-centre. Here is part of the letter I sent to the SMP engineer. The story's true:

When SMP bought Echlin, I perceived an opportunity to voice some concerns and suggestions regarding the distributor caps for 1960-1987 six-cylinder Chrysler products (Echlin MO-4 black thermoset phenolic, MO-40 tan glass-filled thermoplastic, MO-4000 tan glass-filled thermoset phenolic; Standard CH-410 black and CH-410X Blue Streak): For nearly 20 years years, the Echlin caps have been ground off-center. Under the cap, the electrode lugs on one side are almost a complete circle of brass, while over on the other side they're just a little sliver. Even a stock-type short-electrode rotor carves a groove in the underground/oversized cap electrodes (often with catastrophic effects for the distributor drive pinion), and severe secondary overvoltage with undercap arcing results when the spark must jump a grossly excessive gap from the rotor electrode to the overground/undersized cap electrodes.

I brought this to the attention of the folks at Echlin in the late 1980s when I first encountered the problem, thinking it was a small batch of defects. I sent them a detailed description of the problem and a couple of sample defective caps. They sent back a quick note saying all Echlin caps meet OEM specifications, thanked me for writing, and enclosed a new MO-40 for my trouble. That new MO-40 was just as defective, in exactly the same way, as the samples I'd sent in.
