I have a Nip starter removed from a 2000 dodge 318. The problem with the starter is excessive current draw on the solenoind "trigger" wire. It will blow the 15 amp starter fuse on the truck about 1 out of 3 starts. The wireing diagram shows a pull in winding and a hold in winding for the solenoid. The contacts in the back of the solenoid do need replaceing. Would this have any thing to do with the excessive current draw, or would that be strickely a bad coil winding. If I can repair this starter cheap it will be going on my 66 Valiant.

Sounds like a unit that saw heavy usage. My guess is a bad winding is causing the excessive current draw.

For the money, I think I'd probably just go grab another used starter and hope for a lower-miles unit this time. Certainly if you shop for replacement starter parts at the dealer parts counter, it's going to cost a bundle. If you don't want to shop for another starter, how 'bout taking this one to a good local auto electrical house for a complete rebuild? A starter that's seen hard enough service to have a partial solenoid winding meltdown and burnt contacts probably also wants bushings and a careful check of the armature and...
