Hi all,

Just a quick accolade to Charlie S., in case anyone is curious: his little tiny 170 SL6 with a warm cam, headers, a 2 Bbl carb and 3.91 gears moves pretty darn well!

The glasspack mufflers are a tad raspy at idle and downright loud when the pedal hits the floor. Despite a serious cubic inch deficiency, it feels at least as strong as any 225 I've driven, probably a little more. I smiled my approval. Then he reached down among all the racing gauges and flicked a switch, and a little red light turned on. I raised a quizzical eyebrow. "Oh, that's just the arming for the nitrous bottle... Watch this!"

At probably 2500 rpm or so, he mashed the pedal. Lemme tell ya, that puppy breathing laughing gas will outrun my stock Mustang 5.0 without even thinking twice, even though it has about half the displacement.

It's a good thing he limited his showing off to high gear (the pavement was wet, so we didn't have much choice). In first gear, I suspect most of my internal bodily organs would have been rearranged... I suddenly realized why that car really needs high-back seats or headrests. Charlie, I hope you do that before you increase the Nitrous jets, OK? :)

I popped the hood when we got back, to make sure it really was only a slant 6 under there.

Wow. :)

- Erik

PS. When anyone says "Watch This!" you know you're in trouble.

Smile, people will wonder what you are up to. :)

Great post Erik, I'm sure Charlie will say thanks once he see this.

Charlie has certainly made good on his claim that he was going to get back into Slant Six Racing. He nailed "rookie of the year" honers in 2001 and made a number of impressive showings at a few 2002 points races.
I need to dig-out some other pics of his car.

Haven't posted here in a while. During the winter of 02-03, I redid the motor I had been running. Wanted to try a bigger cam, so had my pistons notched. Long story short, machine shop screwed up, and on the 5 pass I hurt 2 pistons. The old motor before freshening up had run a best of 13.43 and 97 mph 1/4 mile. 8.16 and 82 mph in the 1/8. After hurting the fresh motor, I put together a low compression motor. The engine has less the 8-1 compression and a mild Racer Brown cam, I got from Dennis. I also backed down the amount of Nitrous to about 100 hp. Last night went to the track, with a fellow I met last month. He had never been to the drags. Having trouble cutting alight with the LED tree, -.006 red first round, but turned a 13.996 at 92.49 mph in true street class. We now have another slant six fan. He is going to help me, finish my Valiant, and drive one of the cars.

Took the car to Gainesville raceway, Wed night. Set the car up for the 1/8 mile, prior to going to the Slant Six Race at Wilkesborro. Put down a couple of 8.5x passes. The I raised my nitrous pressure 100 psi. Car left very good, 1.78 short time, 8.427 at 78.64mph in the 1/8. Then I got brave/stupid. I keep my foot in it for the whole 1/4 mile. Turned a 13.524 at 94.31mph, and 7100 rpm in the lights. Waaaahoooo!!! Off to Wilkesborro.

That's very impressive, Charrlie. You give me inspiration for my 170 build-up. What ratio are you running in your rear end?

I have an 8 3/4 rear in the car. Normally I run a 3.91 ratio, and 22 tall x 9 inch wide slicks for the 1/4 mile, and 3.91 and 26.5 in tall tire on the street. But that 1/4 mile run had the 1/8 mile gears and tires. For the 1/8 I use a 5.38 gear and a 26 x 7 inch slick. I have run a best of 13.43 at 97 mph in the quarter and 8.16 at 84 mph in the 1/8. That was with a different motor. That motor had over 10-1 compression and about 175 hp nitrous shot. The motor in the car now has less then 8-1 compression and only 100 hp nitrous.
