Hey All,

Today I finally installed a new under the hood wiring harness in my 66 Val. The under the hood section of the wiring harness is out of a 66 Dart. According to the schematic I have, it looks like the Dart and the Val are identical.

I could not figure out where the neutral safety switch wire from the starter relay goes. Everything else, save for the front end lights is hooked up.

Since I don't have a battery tray I hooked up the battery cables to my truck via jumper cables (I know I know, very redneck and not the "best route!!)

I didn't get so much as a click when I tried the key. I know their could be a million things wrong. But I was hoping you guys could throw some things out there to check.

Next Tue I will be going out to the junkyard to get a battery pan and will be able to start actually testing with a real battery and test light to see what is getting juice and what isn't. Where would you all look first?

Thanks All!!!

Chris E.

The Neutral Safety Switch wire, brown in colour, goes to...the Neutral Safety Switch! It's screwed into the left side of the transmission, and is a single-wire device on a '66 trans. If you wanted to juryrig it, you could just ground this wire, then the relay will operate with the trans in any gear.

So if I didn't have the neu saftey sw grounded (or hooked up) during testing, I'd not get her to crank over anyhow.

Correct?

Well, you *could* make it crank if you were to arc the large to the small starter terminal with a screwdriver. But no, if you were using the ignition key, if the starter relay hasn't got feed and ground, no cranking will result.

I just run the wire to ground as Dan said. But you do have to remember that the engine will start in any gear possition. This may not pass some safty inspection & even some race track inspections. But it is a quick easy way out & will test the system for you, and can be run with caution applied.

Hey Guys, I had just a couple of minutes before dark tonight, so I grounded the neu safety switch wire and the car want to crank :D

So hopefully I can get the rest of my junkyard parts this week and get the old girl running.

Thanks,

Chris E.
