Pierre, I pulled the timing cover first. OMG! It was hideous. I didn't think it could possibly get worse until I took the valve cover off. Ugh.

Last night I had my pressure washer hooked up and I was cleaning the driveway. Then I got the bright idea to spray the vc and the timing cover. WRONG thing to do. I ended up with little melted pellets of dried/re-constituted, pasty, oily, NASTY smelling blow by fused to my face, neck and arms. Some of it is still on me today.

YUCK!

Yeah I woulda used a high quality steam cleaner on that stuff :lol:

You can also turn it into soap (no foolin'!) by spraying down the sludged parts with ordinary oven cleaner, letting it do its work, and then washing 'em down.

You come so far already! If it was me, I'd pull the head and see what's up.

If the top of the #6 piston is not damaged, then a used head and a couple of pushrods might make it run just fine. It's common for a couple of open valves to hang up over time and I have revived engines in this way before.

I wouldn't expect the motor to last forever after that, but those 170 motors are very strong. You'll have a hell of a time getting all that crud out of there though.

Maybe it's a bad idea, but it should be fun to see what the rest of the insides look like if nothing else. That head could be off in less than an hour. :wink:

I vote it was Penzoil. I have seen many engines like that and cleaned them up too!

I did a cam/timing chain swap on an '83 Monte Carlo with a 305 about 20 years ago. It had 60,000 miles on it. When I pulled the valve covers and intake the sludge was perfectly formed to them. You could not see the rockers or lifters. All the kid did with the car was drive 20 miles for work each day, and then cruise around with his buddies all night getting high and drinking beer. Car probably never went over 50 mph in it's life. I asked how often he changed oil, and he said "every 7,000 miles just like the owners manual says to". :lol: :lol:

He used regular Mobil 10-30. :?

I run 10-30 Pennzoil in my R/T and change it every 5,000. It doesn't look anything at all like this 170 here. I also put 5000 miles on it in 2 months or so. :D

I use 10-30 Pennzoil in the race car too. It was pretty spotless inside when I tore it down. (I know that's not a big deal when you tear it down every year) :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

You are probably right. I was thinking if I can get a good 225 (workin' on that right now) then I'd pull all the new stuff off the 170 and use it on the 225. Then I could see what was really bombed out in the 170.

The other thing I was thinking...........if the guy took this level of care with the engine, who knows if the trans even works! So I thought I'd get a trans too.

Seems to me that the 225 would be a better driver for me. and it sounds like a couple of guys out there would love to get their hands on the left over 170 stuff.

Who knows??? I'm so confused :?

The old 904 transmissions had no service interval! :shock:

I have seen 20 year old 904 transmissions still in good working order with what looked like the factory oil pan gasket and fluid. If the car was not beat on, the trans could very well still work just fine.

If you really want a 225, then put one in. I think the 170 can get better gas mileage? and the 225 has more power in it's stock form. Either one can be built up.

With all that crud in the engine, it might be easier to pull it out and drop the pan to clean. At that point, putting a 225 back in it's place wouldn't be a bad thing.

See what's available close by at a price you like and then pick.
