Hello everyone,

I am looking for information on how to set up a Holley carb model 8007 4bbl to run right on a slant six installed in a 1975 Dodge stepside pickup.

Are there specific jet numbers that should be used? It is my neighbors truck, and it is running real rich at the moment.

Or should we be looking at adjusting mixture screws? (where ever they are located... can't seem to find any!)

Hi and welcome to the leaning tower of Wisdom :D

Have a look on the holley website - they have a lot of documentation on the subject

Search on this site on using holley 4bbl as the string - there is a lot of info

But as you will see - there is no magical setup that works for all

All the variables of the engine must be known - and it must bee in good running condition - new plugs,points and condensor, - if you have points ignition ,rotor and cap if needed , clean filters, and timing set etc.

Your tuning won't happen overnight, it took me a year. If you don't have the heart for it, Slant Six Dan's advice that the carb will do pretty good right out of the box is sound advice. Holley did spend a lot of salary money on staff and a lot of testing in development and if you just want to hop around town, the stock will work...you should try it until you find what you DON'T like, like a bog, running out of acceleration too early, etc. You need to define the problem before trying to perfect a solution. Get the SA Holley book and maybe two or three more of the leading books. Wnen I rebuilt my first Holley it took my using all three books at once because each of the leading books has a tip the others don't.

I am one of the stepside guys here and recently switched from the Eddy 500 to the Holley 8007. If you search some threads under my name of rock in the last few months you will see some great advice I got from Emsvitl, DI and argentina. As you just were told in the message preceding mine tuning the Holley or any carb is completely dependent on how YOUR vehicle is built advance wise, engine wise, exhaust wise, tranny wise and rear end wise, and how you drive and what you want do as you run. Just for example, I don't use a choke and the absence of a choke and choke horn may affect how your tuning would vary from mine. Plus I am a "tuning nut" and love to spend endless hours in the pursuit of the perfect curve.

Still, I got and took the good advice to make my 8007 into a 4150 by adding the secondary metering block and jets, quick change spring kit, and changed the power valve. For me, with a healthy slant and a 4 speed the optimum was the yellow spring, 51 and 57 jets, 25 shooter, 8.5 power valve and the orange 466 cam on step 1, and a distributor with a 9.8 slot. Course now I am getting used to a 727 automatic and will have to retune, I presume.

Oh, if you take out the shooter, DON'T just turn the carb upside down and lose the parts under it. Watch where that red arm is in relation to the other parts when you disassemble the body, make sketches and take pics til you know the carb. And be sure the secondary throttle plates are adusted above the idle transfer slot.
