Working on my daughter's 63 Dart. Not charging. Previous owner removed the 63 motor and replaced with a 77-78 sl6. When I purchased a replacement alternator it had two field terminals, the one I took off had two field terminals. The chassis has only one wire to connect to the alternator. I now have a new alternator, regulator, battery, I can't get this old girl to charge unless I ground the extra field terminal. Can't really understand how it ever worked in the first place. If i leave it this way I'll surely toast the battery. Did the 63 have a one filed terminal alternator? I'm stuck (-$125)
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks

Grounding the extra field terminal is the correct way to make the '70-up alternator (with 2 field terminals) work with the '69-down regulator (with 1 field wire).

The old one must have been grounded internaly. Ground the new one like you did and your good to go. Or upgrade the regulator to the newer two field style and run an extra wire to the other field. The first is easier. the second provides a little better voltage stablitly.

If your car is a pre-1970 with the original 'buzzbox' voltage regulator it'd have the single post alternator, or a late alternator with one field post wired to the case/ground...
If you have the late model elec. voltage regulator then you'd have 2 field wires.
Did the other alt have a wire that was wired to one terminal and screwed to the alt case, and maybe it broke off or ???

Good luck,
