Going to pickup a parts washer today.

What is your favorite parts washer juice and why? Where do you buy yours?

Thanks,

Chris E.

For a parts washer with a pump my local parts house sells 5 gallon grey drums of 'Solvent' (which nothing more than some blend of petro chemical like Toluol, etc...)

For exceptionally 'nasty' parts, but you can't use it in a parts washer (will eat the paint, plastic parts, your hands), is the big $80 can of that nasty Berryman's Orange stuff (smells like bandaids...you'll need a skin replacement if you don't use protective gloves...).

Does the Berryman's come in a spray can or what? I have a feeling gloves wouldn't be the only protection you need *digs out respirator*

Nope, it comes in a 5 gallon specially lined bucket, with one of those lids that's peened over at the factory...

I was looking for 5 gal cans of mineral spirits at lowes. no luck. just paint thinner, and something else I didn't want to put in the parts washer.

Think napa may sell it?

Hmmm guess I could just call 'em

Dang, Thought post went on.

Varsol?

Wear nitrile gloves (chemical resistant).

Works great on getting dirt/sludge and general degreasing. For final degrease/de-oiling especially before putting each part on that needs gasket or RTV, I use acetone or brake cleaner.

Always well ventilated space while doing it.

Cheers, Wizard

The Pearl solvent was ~35 bucks for five gallons last time I bought it at Carquest. Kinda spendy, but so's gas to drive to Eugene to the chemical specialty places. My tank took two of them.

Chris, Try your local paint supply store or a Sherwin-Williams. You should have said something on Saturday...I still have 15 gallons. I could always use some extra garage space ya know

Safety-Kleen is great stuff, but might be either hard to find, pricey, or both.

A local car parts chain carries "Solvent 140" which is almost as good as Safety-Kleen, I think it cost me about $40 for a 5-gallon bucket.

Varsol is similar stuff, but doesn't dry quite as clean.

A parts-washer is the second handiest-dandiest tool I ever bought (second only to an air compressor).

Just tried Carquest up here in H-town. They didn't know what pearl solvent was but that had some stuff for $77.07 for 5 gal.

Getting a bit better!
