 Post subject: 225 to 225 swap

Ok, so I've got a 67 barracuda with a 225 in it that has a few bad valves. I have a line on a good 31k org mile 225 and 904 from a wrecked '74 valiant. Would this complete motor and tranny be a bold up affair? Same mounts, throttle, and kickdown attachments? I dont have a place to do the swap so I have to try and find somebody or a shop that can do it on the cheap and the easier the cheaper im sure.

I'm in the SF Bay Area in Cali.

The 74 engine uses spool type mounts, so you'll need to reuse the 67 mounts. Also you'll have to use the 74 trans with the 74 motor, as the crank flange at the rear changed in 68 from small to large. All else should be pretty stright forward....unless I forgot something.

You can keep your tranny, but you will need to either talk to Pat Blais or Ed Yost (wildcatmopars.com) for a spacer/bushing that can be installed in the nose of your 74 engine to accomodate the nose of the early torque convertor...Depending on how much work/ease of swap/ condition of other tranny this may have more appeal.

Okay...so what happens if no spacer/bushing is used? I just did a swap this past weekend in a '67 B-cuda -- not sure what year motor came out (it was one with sprak plug tubes, so it's and earlier one), but I do know the one that went in was from a '74 Dart and original to the car. I didn't use and spacer/washer/bushing -- everything lined up fine and there's no vibration like I would expect if the TC was not centered. I don't know what year the tranny is either. I just know it all bolted up and everything seems to work fine...except for the idling issue I have mentioned in another thread.

If you did really mate a 68-87 engine up to a 60-67 auto tranny you may not feel a vibration now, but one may develop later when you least want it to happen, the engine won't suffer, but since the torque convertor has some play, it will have some detrimental effect on the input shaft, stator shaft, etc...

You can look at the side of the tranny, there is a pad where part of the VIN of the car it was installed in was stamped (it may give the 'year' code), or sometimes there is a casting code on the body. Hope it's a late version and you just got lucky.

...front pump bushing, torque converter seal...

1975 was the first year for cylinder heads without plug tubes, but remember, all heads swap onto all blocks, and big/small counterbore forged cranks are interchangeable, so trying to guess what kind of crank you've got by what kind of head you've got is dicey.
