 Post subject: 5 forward gears!

Good news, folks. The T5 is in and running and driving!

I took my '64 Dart for a drive this morning, and it was sweet. Everything works pretty much
as advertised - hydro clutch works like a charm, trans fits well under the hump, upper and lower X
members fit great, speedo even works...

This is an all custom fabricated setup using an '85 V8 Mustang T5 and Slant 10" clutch w/ Mustang disc. I will post full details in the next week or so.

One snag is that the 2nd synchro in this 17 year old trans (off a slightly modded 140k 5.0L Mustang) is FRIED. I tried some quick shifts from 5000+ rpm, and got various levels of nasty grinding into 2nd depending on the wait time for the shift after clutch disengage. I half expected this since it was a cheap ($125), old trans. Also, my "iffy" in-stock driveshaft (52.5" vs. 54" needed) gives a little vibration so I need to get a new/better one. Neither are a big deal, and I can drive the car around for now, but no racing until I get those cleared up. I will either rebuild this trans, or possibly buy a new Ford Racing T5 ($1100) if I feel like I have the $$.

Still have the 3.23s in it, so not TOO nuts yet, but it does some honkin' burnouts in 1st. I'll swap to 3.91s or 3.73s soon. 5th gear is crazy now - like 2000 rpm at 60-65 mph.

Hey Chuck,

I did take a bunch of photos, but I haven't finished the roll yet. Durn old fashioned film cameras... I will be amenable to getting an article together when I have worked the bugs out.

Good job Lou! Did you end up cutting the upper crossmember to get enough ground clearance? i'm looking forward to seeing the pictures. Also, your car looks good in those HRM pictures..

I haven't touched my valiant in a while except for the occational evening trip around town. New (old) house is getting a new kitchen which puts the brakes on the car projects for a while. But the 5spd is working well, home made driveshaft makes my butt numb if I drive over 50mph though. Need to swap the rear end and get a real driveshaft made soon so I can play with it..

Hey Matt,

Good to hear from you. I did chop into the top and underside/driver's side of the upper X. Made a bolt-in upper X out of 1/8" plate and 1X2" box tubing that is very stout, but not too obtrusive - got my TIG-welding Caltech buddy to help with that when I was back in June. I also need a real driveshaft, but may just be able to use a late Dart or Aspen shaft. Thanks again for the advice on the TOB and master cyl, as that was a snap to install, although it took a while to bleed for some reason.

If you remember, I extended that -4 bleeder line up next to the master cyl with enough slack that it can be positioned higher than the MC for bleeding. Makes it real easy to bleed. I just open it up and pump the pedal a couple times slowly, so I don't squirt all over, and I'm done. Would work better with a small low press check valve in the bleed line, like a brake speed bleeder. But I really doubt I'll have to mess with it much. Just make sure those braded lines are secure so they don't rub your pressure plate like mine did. That wasn't fun.

Did that TSM brake kit get installed, I forget? Parking brake?

Matt,

Yep, the rear discs are in and work very well. I didn't think the braking could get much better, but it did. No parking brake yet, but I'll probably go with their kit too.

Good tip on the bleeder line, I might do that. Don't worry, I tied the lines back away from the PP pretty well.

I bet the 64 will be a whole different car on a road course. Keep us posted on the "debugging", kinda a bummer on the soft #2 syncrow, I wonder how hard these are to rebuild?

Yep, I drove it again last night. Fun, but very annoying trying to guess when I can put it into 2nd and not grind - got that figured out. I can see I'll have to practice a bit on downshifting and heel-toe before my next "outing". Gotta get that hanging gas pedal in there too. Right now I'm planning to order a new Ford Racing T5 from Summit next month (when I have the $$$), then rebuild the old one at my leisure.

So OLD Thread I get it. But I am very interested in putting a 5 speed behind my 64 Dart Slant 225.
Two reasons to do so are Overdrive and Weight Saving.

Overdrive because you can cruise at higher speed and get better mileage.
Weight saving because hopefully you can change to a aluminum case trans and aluminum bellhousing. The A833 and the Cast Iron Bell weigh a ton!!!!

There are many more threads on 5 speed swaps, from the early-mid 2000s. Try the search function. I am still running this trans and it has worked very well on the street, dragstrip, road courses, autoX... I will probably do another T5 swap on my 62 Valiant in the next year or three, which currently has an OD 833 w/alum case. I am an overdrive-aholic. My 68 turbo Dart has a 200-4R auto and previously had an A500 Mopar 4spd OD trans.
