Any ideas for a set of tires for 67 dar. not trying to race or anything, just checking for a quality set to do well in rainy weather. i transport my kids daily - yes i sub for a school bus so i want something with maximum mile coverage ie 80k or more, good stop ability also suggestions for a brand - michelin, etc. thanks

That makes it a little tougher than if you had the 5½" wide rims. Try BFGoodrich Traction T/A T, size 185/70R14.

A 185/70 14 puts the overall diameter at 24.2 which is a bit small.....

A 185/75 14 puts the diameter at 24.9 whick is closer to the stock size.

i second the 185-75-14 or even the 195-75 14 for you. the radials are a little shorter than original tire size. ron

also,don't know if you look at goodyear but, look at the goodyear reggatta 2 . it is a nice long wearing tire with good traction for your kids. not expensive. i have them on mine and my customers cars with very good results. ron

Whatever you do, do not buy Firestone. They have made crap at least since my Dad was a kid...

I have had very good luck with Falken tires - never a problem, great traction, low prices. Lots of racing and street miles.

185/70R14 diameter of 24.2" is almost an exact match for the 24" to 24.2" diameter of this car's original-equipment 6.50 x 13 tires. Certainly a size worth considering. Other sizes that'll work well include 185/75R14 (diameter 24.93") and 195/70R14 (diameter 24.75"). Some (including myself, some days) consider 195 a tetch too wide/balloony on the 4½" wide rim — it's a judgement call, and such a match is certainly not unsafe.

My own experience with Goodyears over the years has been mediocre to poor. I don't yet trust the Korean tires (Kumho, Hankook), though they're getting better. Chinese-made tires are a definite no way. Firestone's made too much junk over the years for me to trust them very far, too. I've hated every Yokohama tire I've ever owned. Michelins are good but overpriced. Kelly-Springfield makes some good tires under a bunch of different names — if you have the Discount Tire Company or America's Tire Company chain in your area, you might go in and look at their Arizonian house brand, which is made by Kelly-Springfield. I've owned several sets of Arizonians and have had good results from them. The Arizonian Silver Edition comes in 195/70R14. The Arizonian Rocky Mountain comes in 185/75R14, with a whitewall (which looks good on old cars and is getting very hard to find).

Remember that tire technology has advanced enormously since your car was built, so you're shopping primarily for quality/reliability and not so much for a tire that has any particular engineering feature.

6.50 x 13 tire is actually 24.7" diameter. (the 6.50 was a 90 series tire.... 6.5 * .9 * 2 = 11.7 + 13rim = 24.7)

A 195/70 14 is a perfect match for this, but won't work on a 4.5" rim


Since odometers and speedos seem to read high, a slightly larger diameter will tend to correct (why a 205/70 14 (25.2" diameter) is a good choice with 5.5" rim).


With a 4.5" rim, you really shouldn't go wider than 185, thus the 185/75 14 to get the diameter close (and slightly larger)

The two charts I looked at had 6.50 x 13s at 24 to 24.2, but you're probably right.
Mmm...what makes you say so? A 195/70R14 and a 195/75R14 are both the same width: 195mm.
I haven't found that this is generally true. I've seen 'em read too high and too low. Best thing to do here is to check against the calibrated 5-mile speedometer test sections of the Interstate, if you've got such a section nearby. If not, mile marker posts are a second preference. They're not exact, so use a large number of them -- ten or fifteen rather than four or five -- to compare to your odometer reading.
I agree this is probably close to the ideal size for the 4½" rim width.

There is some variation in actual dimensions between different makes and models of tires having the same nominal specifications.

For comparing approximate tire dimensions, speedometer reading changes, etc, I use THIS CALCULATOR.

To check speedometer error and to set cruise controls in a assorted company vehicles, I use a GPS.

I kinda personally believe that Dr. Jack the transmission specialist who is rebuilding my tranny took an educated guess re rim size so my dad is going to verify my rim size in the a.m. when he goes to check Sandy's progress. i kinda called jack on it and his reply was vague. thanks for the help. i do know where i'm going to purchase them because i found a deal on a new set of my choosing for $175. Ironically one of the local tire shops - not firestone - they couldn't even look my year up so for tire specialists who can't even guess... well.. i regress - the local shop which is a chain is attempting to sell me yokohama(i believe that's the brand or something similiar with a width of 205-225 or something that would make my car look more like a carriage. i listened then referred him to this site. i appreciate all assistance and will update when sandy comes home. thanks again!!!!!!
