Hey All,

I am trying to get the timing gear off the crank, and having quite a time with it. Stuck, stuck, stuck.

I got it to move about 1/4 inch and that is it! I had to put two cold chisels 180 degrees from eachother and tap them downward between the gear and the block. I moved the gear away from the block the width of the cold chisels, but now I am stuck.

Is there some secret to this? Sheesh I wish my FSM was here arlready as I am wondering if I am missing some special 1979 ONLY TIMING GEAR REMOVER CHRYSLER PART NUMBER blah, blah, blah............

You need a gear puller. Commonly they have 3 legs that hook behind the gear and a central screw that presses against the crank. Sometimes a little heat helps.

Figures I have two wheel pullers, but no gear puller. Guess I'll get one tomorrow.

I thought about putting a torch on it but figured I'd ask you guys first.

You can put a torch on it if it's really tight, but the gear puller is the key...

I got a loaner puller from Advance Auto last time I did this (free). They are about $50 for the Advance cheapy one, which worked fine, or about $200 for a name brand Snap On or similar.

Yikes! A free loaner is sounding pretty good at those prices.

For the 2 times I would use this every 10 years, I am thinking $30 from harbor freight will suffice

Hey guys, the 4" puller at Advance auto was only $22 so I went ahead and got it.

I must have had the gear right on the cusp of coming off 'cause I turned the wrench one time and the gear popped off

anyhow thanks for putting up with all my noob stupidity

The one I have is a WalMart El-Cheapo that I've had for at least 30 years. It's virtually identical to this $12.99 unit from Harbor Freight.
