This is my problem. I have to give it about 5+ pumps of gas, then crank it. It cranks for a while, then it catches, but doesn't start. So, 5+ more pumps, crank for a while, and it starts. Sometimes it takes a lot longer though. What could be the problem here?

Today, it was cranking, firing, not starting, cranking some more, until the battery was dead. here comes the weird part. I hooked up the battery charger, set it on "Engine Start" and it fired up as soon as I hit the key. It also ran very good, until I unplugged the charger. and it died. Whats up with that?

The reason I have to give it so much gas is because when the car is off, and I hit the gas, just a little dribble goes down the carb. Is it supposed to be like that? It runs good once started though.

Suggest you buy the three books described in this post as soon as you possibly can. You'll be able to make much faster and less costly progress on your projects once you have these books to refer to.

Sounds like your car has problems with the choke and/or carburetor, and with the battery and/or charging system.

I'll try to get the books next month or so. I currently have the choke rigged up for the car to start up and idle. As far as the battery/charging system goes, I can keep the battery hooked up and it will start up weeks later, and my alternator gauge always is on charge when the car is running.

As long as the car runs soundly for a few months, I will probably be upgrading carburetors later on.

Does the car have points or the electronic ignition?
Have you tested the battery to see if it is putting-out 12 to 14 volts?
(the battery could have a bad cell)

It has points. Brand new, brand new distributer too.

It could be the battery. I'm having trouble finding on that is low enough that the hood won't hit.
