 Post subject: Oil Pressure Sender?

While rewiring the engine compartment I had to replace a gray wire going to (what the service manual says) the oil pressure sender. I had to use a typical crimp-on terminal which had to be manipulated on. While replacing other parts during this project, should I replace this sender too? And if so, how do I remove it and the process in doing that. Thanks in advance -Dan

The pressure senders can eventually rupture and leak oil. You can still buy new ones, and for the time being you can even still buy well-made new ones if you get a good brand (Standard-Bluestreak or Echlin). A special oil pressure sender/switch socket is used to remove and install.

Is it something that I could do myself? How difficult is it and where can I buy this tool from? Also, is there any preparation such as draining the oil? I'm just trying to work my way through this car and replace what is needed, or should be replaced, as I go along. Thanks -Dan

You needn't drain the oil. The socket can be had at any good auto parts store. And it's as simple as removing and installing a bolt.

Sorry, another question. I just looked it up on napa and it has two parts. One is the oil pressure gauge switch and the other one is oild pressure light switch. Which one is this that I'm replacing? Here are the pics of both at napa.

OP6451 is correct. The other one is for cars with an oil pressure gauge (rather than a red warning light).

Just be ginger about snugging it in, you can go too deep with the threading and bust out that part of oil pump, making replacing the oil pump the next job on the list...
