 Post subject: valves, rebuild, wagons

Hi guys! Nice site!

I have a 63 val wagon - rough - engine is original and untouched - about 200k on it. I have heard the when doing a rebuild I should go for special valves due to no leaded gas. Opinion? And where to find these special valves and seats??

Also any recommendations for /6 rebuilding - warnings etc.. Expected cost for good stock rebuild. No bells and whistles.

Lastly - what do you reckon a 63 wagon should go for in fair condition?

Thanks everyone!

Have you tried a valve adjustment?
Unleaded gas will cause valve recession, this takes-up all the valve lash and hangs the exhaust valves open, causing rough running.
You may be surprized how well that 200K SL6 engine runs after you adjust the valves to the proper lash. (.010 intake, .020 on the exhaust)
Search the messages for Valve Adjustment (*all* words, not "any") to get more info.
Here is one that comes-up:
