I just bought a slant six powered `84 D100 and the guy I bought it from said the harmonic balancer was bad and sure enough it is I can see rubber squishing out. I am sure I can change it easy enough but I want to know if there's a seal behind it and if there is shoud I change it too when I change the damper? I don't want to drool oil on my driveway.

The guy I bought it from took out the slant and installed a 383 but decided to build up a ford ranger race truck and sold all his mopar stuff to pay for it. We put the original slant back in it and I drove it a couple of times and it ran rough. That's when he mentioned the damper. He told me he belonged to this site and one other one that don't work and said between the two of them I could get any answer I ever had. Anyways thanks.

Geez looks like eveybody is in church,sleeping off a few to many or perhaps having some drag racing fun.Anyway yes there is a seal behind the balancer and if you can get at it fairly easy on the truck by all means pop it out and tap in a new one. I'm sure you'll get some more sugestions on other things to do as long as you're "in the neigbhorhood" Good luck and welcome to the forum

Slantzilla is right, the seal is inside the timing cover, but that's OK, you probably want to change the timing chain too. It is more likely the cause of the engine running rough. Welcome to the board, any other questions you have there will be someone here that can help you out.

Dogh,it was me having a senior moment or a homer moment Yes install from inside and the "slants" are bring up the timing chain issue which I knew someone would.Do that and it'll run much better and not leak.Wished I could find a gasket to keep this gray stuff from runnin out my ears

Just another question related to this, is there any difference between the years? My local auto zoned has one in stock for a 70's Plymouth. I read somewhere on here that the motor I have is hydraulic. Does that matter, or are they all the same?

You guys are right, these quirky motors are addictive! I've changed the valve cover gasket and the fuel lines so far, and I'm AMAZED at all the room under the hood.

There are 3 styles. The early ones havethe timing marks on the driver's side, the mid years one has the timing marks on the passenger side and is for a steel crank, and the late 6 spoke style is for a cast crank, also with the marks on the passenger side. The later 2 styles are interchangeable.

Made in Australia, sold by a reliable US vendor, and it has two timing marks, presumably for compatibility with timing indicators on either side. The only thing that makes me a little cautious is that the timing mark location was changed from '62 to '63, but the timing indicator was not, so especially on early applications it would probably pay to double check.
