Howdy

I have a question about my rearview mirror on my 72 demon. Whenever I gas, brake, hit a bump, etc. my mirror flops all over. It is much worse in the top ball and socket, but the bottom one is to blame too.

I tried putting a drop of nail polish in the crack of the ball joint because I knew I could remove it it if wasnt good, but that only lasted a few days before it started to crack off.

I don't want to superglue it because invariably someone will borrow the car and I will forget to tell them not to touch it, or my girl will want to put on her lipstick when Im in a store... and it will get broken- anyway, I don't want to fix it solid- I just want to introduce a friction agent.

I thought maybe pine tar or honey, but when it gets hot these will be useless, not to mention messy to clean if unsuccessful.

Any ideas?

thanks

Kevin

Some Mopar mirrors have an allen head screw on the back (windshield side) of the ball to tighten it up. If yours doesn't have it, it should be an easy swap.

Remove the mirror mounting bracket/sunvisor end clip seat from the roof of the car, and you'll see the spring steel plate that puts tension on the top ball joint. You can bend the plate or make use of a prick punch to increase the tension. The bottom ball joint is tougher; it's inside the mirror itself. But it might not be the actual bottom ball joint flopping around -- check the screw (allen or philips) that holds the mirror head to the stem. If it's loose, the mirror will flop.

If the above doesnt work. I took a piece of thin shim stock (plastic) and shimmed between the ball and the clamp and that let me adjust the mirror and lasted about 3 months on washboard roads until the replacement was in.
Thanks
Frank

I was picturing a springsteel flap, not the dimpled hole in a flat sheet... Where it wasn't mirror polished from thirty some years of rubbing, it was lubricated by rust dust!

I rubbed the ball on the sidewalk and scuffed the friction plate with some sandpaper, then popped it a couple times with a planishing hammer to give it back some tightness.

Now it feels real tight, like it might be able to stand up to the revs inspired by my 4.10 rear.

I guess I have a little fear of messing with parts that are not broken- like my headliner and rearview mounting screws- I have had nightmares with interior trim before.

Thanks again

Kevin

I had that problem on a '70 Bee. I pulled the mirror and added a piece of cloth in there between the ball and the metal strip.. I never had a problem after that!
