Can someone I.D. this part of the trasmission where it is leaking. It is a small compartment at the back of the tranny and just in front of the cross member. It appears to be about 1 1/2" by about 4" and has a few bolts. Also, is this something
that the cover can be removed and the gasket replaced or is a bunch of stuff going to pop out, in which case it should be left to a pro.

This sounds like your push-button housing. Does a cable go into it from the drivers side? This can be removed but there is a trick to disengaging the cable that can't be done from the outside. I've had mixed results with this job. If I remember correctly there is a c-clip on the inside of the pod that holds the cable housing, then the cable itself is wound in like a spring. (the tricky part) I'm hoping one of the other gurus will chime in and tell you something similar or correct my method. I think you can do it, be prepared to spill some ATF.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, there is a cable going into it from the drivers side. I'll wait to hear from any others about the repair method and if they concur. If they do I'll probably have a pro do it (I may want to sell it in the near future, '63 convt.) since I don't want to take any chances of messing anything up.

The cable can be removed by loosening the hold down nut and getting access to the spring clip by removing the access plug. The spring clip can be hard to "trip" if you are not fimilure with how it works. See photo below.

Once the cable is removed, the housing is still tricky to remove due to the way the lever and cable sleeve mount into it.
