PostPosted: Mon Jul 15, 2002 5:28 pm
I gotta an old 6 - popped the head cuz of water in the oil - everything looks fine to me! But - there is a slight ridge on the top of the cylinders.

One guy says "AAAA - it aint so bad" Slap the head back on!!"

The other guy says " That means you need a rebuild!"

What say you???
Thanks again guys!

How did the water get into the oil?
I have seen Slants with cracked blocks.
If you found a worped head or blown head gasket, I would service the head and put it back together.

Ahhh, a new clue, those stock metal head gaskets are really hard to see leak problems, they can loose torque and leak. How did the head bolts feel when you removed the head? Did all the bolts "snap" loose (pop) or did they feel kinda loose and easy to remove?

Well, a $30.00 composition head gasket and some clean-up / assembly time will tell the story, it may be worth the "gamble" to put the engine back together an run it, to see what happens. If it still makes "milk shake oil", then it's time to find a different engine.

Ok!! My neighbor took another look and you are right - it was the gasket!!! The clue was this - ONE Piston was totally clean on top - the others were Black. He said that that was proof that water had been entering that cylinder. So - problme solved. Now I do waht you said - comp gasket and start her up!! Thanks! You probably saved me a grand!

No Bill?? ;)
