Hey all,
well i splerged and bought a new Carter Carb to replace my old 2280 holley, and i was wondering how i can tune it??, right out of the box it ran not too bad on the road but the idle was off abit, so i hooked up a vac guage to a port on the carb ok, 22psi of vac, so i turned the first screw (standing at the front of the truck and on the drivers side) it turned all the way in and nothing happend really, so i back it out 2 turns and turn the other (pass side) and it goes down to 20 so i back it out 1/2 and i get 23psi, so i play around some more and not too bad, i can light the tires up more easily with less throttle on dry pavment than that crappy 2280 and its awsome on the hwy.. i can now do 90+ MPH facing a slight wind!! (you'll have to look way way way back to find my other posts about my "power" problem) so what jet sizes should i go to?? it seems like after 1/2 throttle its beggin for more jet to go but i dont know which to get, i asked and they said jets are availible for that model of carter! anywho just lettin you all know, sorry a couple more questions, now as for clutches how do i tell if i have and 11"?? i can buy an 11" cluch assembly for 150 bucks plus the bearings and i need to know if i can put one in my truck if i dont already have one, also the starter rests on the lip of the oil pan and seems like its the low position, is this the normal position?? thanks

Where'd you get the new carburetor from? Where do you get jets from? Is this the late style BBD used in the late 1970's and later?
If so, you may be able to tweak the metering rod adjustment for part throttle fuel ratio. Back when I had one on my /6 I messed with the rod adjustment and sure noticed the part throttle difference going up hills.

Hey Craig,
well i got the Carberetor from Autovalue (Piston Ring) here in winnipeg, and same with the jets, i can get just about any jet size and i'm not sure what year this thing is out of, its a rare model i guess because they had to get one and build it. i still have the old one and i belive it came off of a 76 but i cant say for sure, is there a book i can buy for this carb or can someone around here provide me with instructions or pictures?? i think i have a rod adjustment on this one so i'll try bending it, anyway i should bend?? straighter or more curvey?? and can someone please explain the clutch thing to me, i need a clutch pretty darn bad in this baby right now!!

Thanks a mill

Justin

If it's the BBD I'm familiar with (used on slant 6's from 1977 and up, and lots of 318 v8's during the 70's and into the 80's) there is no need to bend anything. The adjustment is under the sheetmetal cover on top of the carb. The service manual refers to it as "qualifying adjustment" or something like that. You have to get everything to the initial adjustment point and then tweak it from there. I don't know how to explain all of it here in words. I was able to figure it out myself by studying the situation.
