whats a good general off the shelf torque convertor for a slant w/ a 904? i went to summit and was looking at either the TCI #TCI-141300 that stalls at 2400 or the hughes #HUP-27-30 that stalls at 3000. which of these would be the better choice in a street driven duster, 225,shaved head,stcok cam and 2.76 rear gear? im eventually going to give it a little more gear, possibily 3.23 or 3.55 and id like to put a cam in eventually. btw whats the stock stall on a slant?

I can't answer the other questions, but I think the stock stall speed is 1700 RPM. I would think 2K would be a good range if you're planning on putting in a mild cam.

Those converters are most likely rated for a V-8. They will not stall that high behind a slant six. One of the determining factors of stall speed is torque input. With out knowing the input torque, the stall speed number is worthless.
A good example is the converter I have in my car. It is a custom built converter. I asked for approx 3,000 rpm, and give the builder my engine specs. It actually has about 3,100-3,200 WOT stall behind mt 170 engine. This same converter is now behind the 225 engine in my other car, and the WOT stall is almost 4,000 rpm. More cubes = more input torque = higher stall.
One of those converters, will even, have a large variation in stall speed, depending on whether it is behind a 273 or a 360.

im assuming then that your engine is more built up than mine, im leaning toward the 2400 simply cause its cheaper and i may or may not decide to put a v8 in the car (we're talking years down the road) its a daily driver so i cant afford to have the car down for any real extended period of time, as far as drivabilty goes well i can live with that pretty much

Hello,

Fred at Midwest Torque convertors suggested and built me a 2400 after hearing my build, which is a pretty stout engine. BUT, it is going to a 3.91 truck. Chaarlie gave as clear an explanation of stall to torque as I ever read, and you can extrapolate from his explanation to see that going much higher than that may leave you unstalled, in essence. But don't think that if you are watching a tach that the instant you hit, say 2400, you will be at stall speed. There are too many variables, and it may be a 2550 stall, or a 2340 stall, and so on. Pull er donw into low with your foot on the brake and about 1500 you are gonna see some stroing desire to move, and you know that isin't much above idle. It depends if you are looking to go to 6500 or to about 4500, too.

The main point I tried to make is, don't buy an "off the shelf" converter based on advertised stall speed, for any engine, but particully for a slant six. You will not get what you expect. Call a converter manufacturer, give him your vehicles info and let him give you what you wnat/need. There are several converter manufacturers, discussed on this site, with slant six experiance. If you really want one of the converters from Summit, call Hughs/TCI, give them the part numbers, and ask them what the stall speed will be for a slant.

Ya,, what charlie said,, Off the shelf from Hughes list a 3000 converter. with a 200 horse slant in front of it 2200 was the top rpm. to get it to 3000 you may have to put 350+ HP in front of it . so take the listed numbers and guess-ta-mate what you want out of the converter.

My Midwest 8" nitrous converter will stall right at 3000 with my good motor set up for nitrous. (Timing retarded, cold plugs)

It will stall at 3400 behind a stock motor w/4bbl.

It goes 3800 or so when the nitrous hits on the starting line with the good motor. :lol:
