Hi all! after selling my 1968 valient (sl6) 7 years ago, today i picked up a 1973 dart 4 door. after putting a new water pump and fuel pump in it it. plus a full radiator flush. it fired right up after sitting for 5 years, and it drove the highway quite well on the way home. the interior is thrashed but the body and paint are mint and stock plus no rust anywhere!.i need to replace the seats and dash pad, plus i have no turn siginals or dash lights and my fuzes are good. my questions are:

there is some play in the wheel, i did adjust the steering box but it needs replacement how easy is it and are parts avil?

also i want to disable all the emmissions crap on the car, looks easy and i have done it to a few vintage gm's.

whats up with the carbon filter for the gas line?

can i mod this engine and get more proformance cause my last sl6 hauled ass. also that tiny carb has to go .... replacements avil?

i have some noise from my lifters, how easy is that to fix?

sl6 225 123K org miles. solid trans. decent shape engine

cheers!

MiDi

Welcome MiDi,

Define Easy. Sounds like you have some mechanical aptitude. Shop around. Are you sure it's the box?

The first question would be "Why?" Is it damaged/unuseable? If you have to go through a Smog check up in PDX it might be a problem. The EGR only functions when the engine is warmed up and vacuum is high. It won't cost you anything in power to run it, and allows more timing for better cruise economy. Not a lot, but every little bit helps.

It keeps fuel vapors from stinking up the car.

Take a look at the Articles section of this site. Lot's of information. A search for various upgrades will net a wealth of information in the Engine section. It'll also save you lots of time.

You have a mechanical valve train as long as the engine wasn't replaced with a later model. Setting the valve clearances is an important maintenance evolution with this engine. Do a search, or perhaps one of the others members can provide a link to the procedure.

Thanks for the info, i can use all the help i can get!

right now i am trying to get the electrical problems fixed, i have no dash lights, turn siginals, & power to the stock am/fm radio. i checked the fuses and there all ok, so i am wondering what else this could be.

any one have a clue?

also i just found out that i have no trunk key, i am trying to contact the seller to see if he has it, other wise i am gonna have to pay a lock smith to get a new key made.

the entire inside of this dart is thrashed, so i am on the lookout for new seats and a dash pad. the headliner has some tears but i can sew them up by hand. the front seat has a board across it cause its so dammaged!

i did get this old girl up to 75mph on the freeway home and she held it well
the trans, engine, shocks, tires & body are solid but i do need to go thru the engine, give it a tune up and ect. this car sat for 5 years i even found a hornets nest ... full of hornets in the left rear door (hahaha) so after removing that. i spent a few hours yesterday cleaning it out.

anyone know a good parts place in portland, or?

cheers!

Do you see any evidence of water getting in? The wiper seals often give out and leak. You may find corrosion on the back of the instrument cluster. There are a lot of terminals etc. that will need to be inspected. The harness for the turn signal switch and it's connector may be a problem as well. Do your gauges work? Have you verified supply voltage at the fuse panel? Is there corrosion anywhere on it?

Grounds tend to be a big issue with these cars. check to make sure all the grounds are intact and making good contact.

Do you have a factory service manual for the car yet?

Getting a FSM should be your first step to restoration and repair. I got mine on disk, and it's invaluable. The aftermarket manuals are sadly lacking in most aspects.
Be careful if pulling the instrument cluster. It's very easy to break old, brittle plastic.

We need to move your post to the "Other" section to get more visibility for it. If you pop back in and can't find this post, it'll be up there.
It's a better place to get answers to technical questions. :D

thanks for the great replys ceej!

well looks like no water is getting in, i even took it thru a car wash and not a drop of water got in. all my gauges do work other than the temp gauge and that is because the sensor is dead and i am gonna replace it this weekend. i did get out my multimeter and checked a few of the volatges and the panel but i ran out of time because i had to work.

i do not have a fsm i am trying to find one i can download.

i will keep on trying to get the turn siginals and dash & dome lights running because i need that stuff so i can drive to the parts store and junk yards. also i tryed again to adjust my steering box but i still have a large amount of play in the wheel so i guess i am gonna have to hunt one down and replace it, and i have no clue how to do that.

i did get car insurance on it today it runs 8.00 a month :) and that is awesome cause i'm pretty strapped.

my plan is to spend the winter and early spring restoring this dart and maybe add a few mods to get a little kick out of the sl6. but basically i am gonna leave it stock as i can. i will post some pictures in the gallery tonight.

cheers!
