I have recently installed a pertronix module and pertronix flame thrower coil in my 1964 225. I've also installed the 2 barrel intake and Carter carb. After correcting some wiring problems, the car is running very good. I have good power and I'm getting around 19-20 mpg. However, the car misses at idle. It had a little miss at idle before the swap, but it has gotten worse. I am going to upgrade the ignition system per info I have gleaned from this site. Blue Streak cap, Accel rotor and Magnecore wires. My question is what is the difference between 8mm wires and 7mm wires and which one would be best for my application.

Also, what idle rpm should I be looking for with this set-up?

8mm wires are 1mm larger dia. This is just insulation. Not really necessary with your setup. As for the miss at idle: Have you adusted the valves? With a stock cam should be .010 intake, and .020 exhaust.

Using the extended tip spark plugs really helps........

Autolite 985s (which I use and can remember the number for)

or

there's NGKs (which I can't remember the number for (Dan knows :wink: ))

Whatever one you use, set them at .045

I have the peanut plug heads and use the NGK UR4/6630 plugs gapped at .040 which are excellent! They run a light cinnamon color.

I am also following Dan's setup suggestions, new electronic distributor re-curved with red primary spring and a extra long looped spring from a 400 big block distributor. Using a 15R governor and a 11R vacuum advance screwed in 3 turns. Blue Streak cap, MO-3000 Echlin rotor, Chrome Blaster 2 coil and 8mm Blue Summit wires. Timing set at 20 degrees initial.

My engine idles perfectly, no miss, then growls like a beast! :)

NGK ZFR5N, gap to 0.040" (0.045" is a little too wide), and remember, remove the metal ring washers from the plugs before installing them in your '64.

I did an engine rebuild years ago and switched to the peanut head. Last week I changed out the spark plugs and went with the NGK UR4 GP plugs as I saw suggested somewhere on this site. I did not realize that this was a platinum plug until they told me so at the parts store. I have since read a message where SlantSixDan said that platinum was not neccessary. The plugs I removed looked good, they all had a light brown color but two of them fell apart as I removed them (they were champion plugs).

My ignition wires looked good and haven't been in the car long. They are standard chain store wires. Last night in darkness I observed fire flying from the top of the coil and off one of the plug wires. So I am ordering magnecore wires 7mm. I have a blue streak cap on the way. I bought the pertronix several years ago and just now am getting back to work on the car. The pertronix kit came with a rotor that looks like the Accel long tip that SlantSixDan recommends.

I probably do need to adjust the valves.

With the carter 2 barrel the lowest idle I can get is around 600 - 700 rpm. The FSM for my 64 says the one barrel should idle at 500 rpm. I am assuming that the 2 barrel is supposed to idle a bit higher. Does this sound reasonable?

Your right, we probably don't need the platinum tip, but they are not that much more and run great. I drive over 120 miles a day, stop and go, freeway, etc. and they very work well, Dan's recipe is right on. My engine will idle down to around 300 rpm. If you run some Seafoam through it that may clean out the carbon build up plus l run the valve lash looser, .012 and .022, so it will idle down lower.

That is a good test, opening the hood at night when its dark.
Before I switched wires and to Dan's setup, it looked like the Fourth of July.
I never had a consistent idle like I have now.

The two barrel should idle down if it isn't sucking too much air through the throttle shaft. If it is bushed tight with Teflon or oil light bushings it will idle down no problem.
