Ok, all Help....

I've searched the data base and found if the rotor is not turning then its the timing chain or a gear??

the 71 :evil: 225 slant six was running rough. Followed the advice of many and switched to Pertronix. She ran great for a day and then I took a corner and she died. I got her started and nursed her home now she won't start just turns over.

I pulled the cap and the rotor doesn't move. A friend of mine told me to take off the valve cover and see if the valves move. If they do then its the gear on the distributer assembly and not the timing chain. :evil:
Any info is greatly I mean greatly appreciated.

I would pull-out the distributor first. (fewer bolts to remove)
Inspect the distributor's plastic drive gear, then go from there.

I understand you turn this to the twelve oclock position and then it pulls right out?? I could quit being lazy and go read the book.

If the rotor is not turning, it really does not matter where it is sitting now.
Just pull it out and take a look at the gear.

With a failed distributor gear or timing chain, you will be re-setting the distributor's position either way.

Ok, it was the gear and I got all the pieces. I have a new one on the way. So how do I do the timing once the new gear and roter are back in. I have heard something about base timing?

My method for establishing base timing.

Remove valve cover.

Install bolt in forward end of crank to aid in cranking.

Remove coil wire on coil end

Rotate crank while watching #1 cyl intake rocker. Continue rotating until you see the intake valve fully closed. Look and see if timing mark on damper is near timing tab. Get it as close as possible to your target base timing (mebbe 5 BTDC).

Put the distributor in the hole with the rotor pointing toward #1 (look on the cap)

With the key on rotate the distributor back and forth till you get a spark from the coil wire( or #1 spark wire)

Clamp the dist down, replace the coil wire and fire that baby up....fine tune the timing with a light.

Set the valves and replace the valve cover.

Extensive burnout testing recommended. You are looking for at least 30 ft from both tires. :wink:

Thanks for the help. Love the thirty feet burnout. I can get that with my VMAX but not sure with the Demon just yet. :D

I had a problem with my 63 Dart w/ a 72 225 that was breaking distributer gears left and right. It turned out being a bad distributer. Put a new one on, and I haven't had a problem since. So, if you break another gear, you might want to think about getting a new distributer. I got mine at AutoZone for less than $50.

If you'd like Im having a friend who "has an Uncle " that makes gears make me some iron gears. If it works out Ill tell you and get you one made up if you want one.

The only time that the 68 Valiant I had ever left me stranded was when the distributor gear broke. The distributor was a junk yard one that I had gotten when I converted it to electronic ignition. It lasted about 2 years. Put a new one in and no more problem. After converting to electronic ignition no more setting point blindfolded.
