hi guys i have been looking at all kinds fo sl6 stuff, i'm bored and its way to nasty outside to be working on my car. so my question is:

why did the sl6 loose a lot of hp from 1971 to 1973?

225 1964-1971 8.4 to 1 145 @ 4000 215 @ 2400
225 1972 8.4 to 1 110 @ 4000 185 @ 2000
225 1973 8.4 to 1 105 @ 4000 185 @ 1600

and since it is basically the same engine (as far a i know) how i can i get that extra hp on my 73 225? (my last slanter was a 68 225)

Advertised numbers are just that, numbers other than a cam change and some timing changes over the years the basic engine itself is unchanged.

In 1972 the industry changed the way they measured the HP and Torque on the engine from one standard to another which lowered the ratings, after 1972, rising use of emissions equipment and other demands on the engine stiffled more power out of it, until it eventually was advertised at a weezy 90 hp...

Even then, with the wide margin of error in each engine ( the deck height can vary enough to cause your compression ratio to be anything from 7:1 up to the advertised 8.4:1), the true amount of power your mill makes can also vary. I did a series of G Tech Runs trying to 'improve' a stock 1967 engine (rated at 145 gross HP), in the end with timing and better jetting, and bumping the compression ratio to be closer to the stock number, all I could get was 120 hp on the street...


So take that with a grain of salt...it's like the big block guys who can look at the advertised numbers for thier mills (like a stock Hemi really makes 425 HP...my brother's boss took his stock 1970 Hemi Cuda in for dyno test back in 1990...and rolled a 625 at the rear wheels...)

Besides, there's lots more in there with some basic tuning, and upgrades...

thanks a ton i really enjoyed reading that other post and reading the replys on this one.

the weather cleared up for a second so i installed a new temp sensor but i still have a dead temp gauge. (my only dead gauge) and i picked up a nice set of bosch wiper blades for 50% off so my entire parts run was 11.98!! so i need to figure out this temp gauge problem.

anyways ... i'm back at it working on this turn siginal problem.
