Definitely could be a Sears or Monkey Wards job. I can remember my dad went to both of them.

On the shocks, when I got the new Monroe's they had a plastic band holding them compressed. When I cut it to put them on, they immediately began to expand. To the point where I had to recompress one of them (with much greater difficulty than the old ones) to get it in the holes.

I've already got the first book listed - shop manual. I'll look for the others too.

Ah, there you go, then. Both of those chains, and others like them, tended to periodically run sales drives on the accessory-o'-the-month (week, season, etc.). That's how gas-charged shocks work. Non-gas-charged shocks have been off the market for years.
