In my '75 Valiant, I noticed the tranny fluid is red with some black sludge in it. I plan to have the fluid changed out, but if there is sludge is it too late for the tranny or will things be ok if I simply change the fluid and filter? I plan to give the car a good fix up. Thanks, Dave

By all means have the fluid and filter changed, and the bands and linkages adjusted. If the transmission is behaving normally and the gunk in the trans pan is the only troublesome indication, you may have many miles remaining before major trans work is required.

Unless the sludge is plugging leaks. Last time I did a fluid change my front seal sprang a big leak!!

FYI: if the fluid has never been changed, you may find a very fine bright metal dust in the bottom of the pan - if so, don't worry about it
