I did the EI upgrade on my Valiant years ago, now I'm doing my new 330 and my brain is a little foggy on the install. I recall buying a new harness from my Chrysler dealer that made the job clean and easy. Does any one have a part # for that (Dan), I was also wondering about a link for the wiring diagram. This is for a '64 Dodge, I don't know that that makes any difference.

Thanks, Pat.

You're thinking of p/n P3690152, but see HEI upgrade instructions.

O.k. Very good link. I had been wondering about that upgrade for some time now but my priority list is always pretty long and it wasn't even on it at the time. (it is now) The vehicle I'm doing the conversion on is currently points ignition and I have a donor from an '83 acclaim for the upgrade. So I need to convert to EI first and then do the HEI mod? or at least plan it out and do them simultaneously. Sounds like I still need the harness though.

Ummm...tilt. There's no such a car as a 1983 Acclaim. Acclaims were made from 1989 to 1995, and they were front-drive cars with 4-cylinder or Mitsubishi V6 engines. No interchangeability of ignition components with the slant-6. If you install HEI, you use an ordinary Chrysler electronic-ignition distributor. You can use the EI harness if you want, but it's kind of a waste of money to do so, because you'll be cutting it up anyhow. Might as well just run your own wire. If your distributor you have is actually from a 1983 "anything", check carefully to make sure it has a vacuum advance and a single pickup inside. The non-vacuum/dual-pickup distributors aren't suitable for conversions.

You're right of course, I was just checking to see if you were awake. It's the Plymouth equivalent to the Diplomat. Is there any way to make the dual pickup Vac-equipped distributor work because that's what I have. Don't go sending me to the wreckers in this icy weather now.

I had a dual pickup WITH vac advance dist in my '81,W-150 truck (4X4). Like the lean burn, the 2 pickups are "start" and "run". They had a switching relay to switch between the 2 pickup coils. Youd be better using it as a core and tell the counterman you have, say, a '76 (anything) that woulda had a slant 6. Or else replace the pickup plate with one that only has a single pickup coil. I remember my dad having an 82 Gran fury (plymouth's "Diplomat") with a slant. While I do remember it having a standard 4 pin ECU rather than lean burn, its been too long for me to remember whether his car had a single or dual pickup coil.

That'll be the Gran Fury in the US, Caravelle in Canada.

You've got dual pickups and a vacuum advance? Unusual. OK, you can install a single-pickup plate (which either means a trip to the wrecking yard or a relatively large expense at the parts store), but you'd really be better off getting an earlier distributor. The advance curve on that '83 distributor is going to be a very poor one. Remember, by '83 the 225 was wheezing out 90 horsepower or so, and much of the loss was down to a slow advance curve.

There are usually good brand-new electronic distributors on eBay...

That be Caravelle.

Fair enough, consider it a paperweight and I'll get myself an earlier unit.

Thanks for all your insight.
